Many of the complications of Type 2 diabetes, including kidney failure, heart failure and strokes are influenced by blood pressure. The amount of table salt (sodium chloride) you eat can influence blood pressure, and restricting salt can actually lower blood pressure. Eating too much sodium raises blood pressure… to some degree in most people and to a larger degree in sodium-sensitive people.

Researchers in the Blood Pressure Unit, St. George’s Hospital Medical School in London, England, examined thirteen articles on salt restriction in diabetes. Their review was published in December, 2010 in the Cochrane Database System Review.

Two hundred and fifty-four cases were studied in the literature, including 158 with Type 2 diabetes. Salt was restricted for an average of one week, as a result urinary sodium was reduced 7.3 grams per day on average among the Type 2 diabetics. Their systolic blood pressure (top number) was reduced by an overall figure of 6.9mm and the diastolic blood pressure (bottom number), was reduced by 2.87mm. It was therefore concluded that diabetics might do well to lower their salt intake to 5 to 6 grams per day, or even lower.

Adding herbs or spices to food is one helpful way of lowering salt, adding more diverse flavors… taking in some healthful nutrients at the same time. Cinnamon is known for its antioxidant properties and its ability to help lower blood sugar in diabetics. In a recent study, capsaicin, the flavoring contained in chili peppers, was shown to lower blood pressure in animals.

Some of the foods highest in sodium include:

  • table salt

  • preserved foods: bacon, Canadian bacon, cured or smoked ham and pickles

Sodium is also found in baking soda and baking powder, tomato juice, vegetable juice (unless low-sodium), and buttermilk.

If you like salty foods, you may be worried you will never enjoy food again, but you are wrong. Your taste buds will adjust reasonably fast, soon you will find foods you used to like will taste unpleasantly salty. The salt taste almost disappears when cooked, but adding a small amount of salt to say fresh tomatoes will give a satisfying sensation.

Don’t forget to check labels, sodium or salt shows up in interesting places, eg. canned soups… most are loaded with sodium. Don’t buy those with more than 500mg per cup.

Violent contraction of the diaphragm and other respiratory muscles is provoked by patient’s attempt to drink water. The sight or sound of water may also provoke attack.

Other symptoms include panic, delusion, hallucination, spitting and biting. Patient may also present with a characteristic barking. Cranial lesions develop leading to hyperpyrexia. Quite a number of cases end up in fatality.

Diagnosis

Prevention of Rabies
Professionals who handle potentially infected animals should be given pre-exposure prophylaxis. Laboratory workers who work on Rabies virus and those who live in Rabies endemic areas should also be given prophylaxis.

Protection is achieved by giving two intradermal injections of 0.1ml human diploid train vaccine, or two intramuscular injections of 1ml, given 4 weeks apart followed by yearly booster dose.

Post exposure prophylaxis

1. Clean wound thoroughly using a quaternary ammonium detergent or soap. Excise damaged tissue and leave wound unsutured.

2. Rabies can be prevented if treatment is started on time – within a day or two after exposure or bite.

3. Vaccinate patient with human diploid cell strain vaccine. 1.0ml should be given intramuscularly on days 0, 3, 7, 14, 30 and 90. in developing countries where human rabies globulin may not be available, give 0.1ml of vaccine I.M. into 8 different sites on day 1, followed by single booster on days 7 and 28.

4. Sometimes treatment can be delayed for up to 5 days to observe the biting animal or while the examination of its brain is being awaited.

5. Confine the biting animal if possible. If after 5 days the animal is still healthy, then it doesn’t have Rabies, and treatment should be stopped. But if the animal dies or is killed, the brain should be examined by immunofluorescent for Negri bodies. If positive, treatment should be continued.

Control of spread

I. Domestic dogs should be licensed and vaccinated
II. Stray dogs should be killed
III. Monitor reservoir host
IV. Vaccinate at-risk animals and man
V. Imported animals should be controlled and quarantined.
